A photographer’s guide to running mini sessions

Mini sessions are the highest-revenue-per-hour thing most portrait photographers do, and the fastest way to a bad weekend if the operations are wrong. The photography is the easy part.

The scheduling maths

The standard structure works because it accounts for reality rather than best case:

The buffer is not optional and it is the first thing people cut. Five minutes absorbs the family who arrives late, the toddler who needs a moment, and the outfit change nobody mentioned. Without it, one late arrival at 10am pushes the entire day and you are apologising by two.

The break is also not optional. Shooting 24 families back to back without stopping is how the last six sessions end up being the ones you rush.

What to charge

Mini session pricing in this market generally runs $150 to $250 for a 10-minute session with a small edited gallery. The variables that move it:

Number of edited images. Eight is standard. Offering the full gallery as an upgrade at $75 to $100 more converts well, because the family has just seen the set and wants the ones you did not pick.

Whether the set is built. A styled, built set justifies more than a backdrop, and it is the reason people book minis rather than a park session.

Deposit structure. Take one. A $50 non-refundable deposit with the balance due a week before the session dramatically reduces no-shows compared to collecting everything on the day, and it is a smaller barrier than asking for the full amount up front.

The operational things that decide the day

Tell people when to arrive, not when their session starts. This is the single biggest fix. If a session is at 10:00, tell the family to arrive at 9:50. Two families arriving simultaneously for 10:00 and 10:15 slots is the most common way these days fall apart.

Send a prep email a week out. What to wear, when to arrive, what to expect. Outfit indecision on the morning is where family stress comes from, and stressed families photograph exactly like stressed families.

Do not promise a treat for good behaviour. Worth passing on to parents. It reliably produces the exact expression you do not want.

Have one person who is not you managing the door. If you are greeting, checking in, and shooting, you are doing three jobs badly. On a 24-session day this pays for itself.

Set your editing expectation before the day, not after. Twenty-four sessions at eight images each is 192 edits. Promise two weeks and deliver in ten days rather than the reverse.

Where to shoot them

Building a set for a mini session weekend costs a day of labour, a pile of props you store for eleven months, and the space to leave it standing. Renting a studio that already has the set built removes all three.

We rebuild four sets through the year — Valentine, spring, autumn, and Christmas with a separate Santa setup — and publish the calendar months ahead so photographers can sell a season before we build it. Studio time is $125 for two hours or $395 for a full day, which across 24 sessions is a small fraction of your revenue for the day.
